Who is this Kumu Hula Intensive training for? If you want to teach the hula it is for you!
In the past few days I have gotten several emails from people asking if the
Kumu Hula training is for Kumu Hula only?
The Kumu Hula Training is for those who have always wanted to become trained as masterful teachers of the Hawaiian Culture and it's hula. The opportunity to do so is not an easy thing to find. I know, I've been there. First of all, to locate a Kumu that wants to openly share of their mana'o. is a major challenge.
Location is also another challenge, as is time.
What I love about Kumu Keli'i is his heart. He is generous with his
knowledge and shares it with those who seek it out. I know that there
are those of you who feel intimidated, wondering if you are good enough.
You are good enough! And this training is for you!
If you are a Kumu Hula or hula instructor you are also welcome to take this course. Some Kumu hula want to see through different eyes. This does not take away anything from what you know. It only makes you a better source of wisdom. The only limits are those that you put on yourself. Why not become a vessel of knowledge.
The Kumu Hula Intensive is set to run for three and a half years, two sessions a year.
Wow! I really get so excited for everyone choosing this time to further their mana'o.
This training is being made this training available for all who would choose to become Kumu Hula.
This is a dream come true for many. The only pre-requisite is knowing that you want to be a teacher of the hula.
Kumu Keli'i posted this the other day on his Facebook page:
"It is a minimum requirement that any Kumu hula
should know if he or she wants to be an effective teacher of the
Hawaiian arts. There is much to learn. So come and join me in Colorado! I
hope to see you there. After the courses are completed in few years,
your name shall appear below my hula genealogy as your hula genealogy.
This is your mana! This is your authority to carry on my legacy in the
traditions of my ohana and Kumu hulas. E 'ike paha kaua ma laila."
If you have this desire, and you haven't emailed me for an application please do so today!
Your destiny is in your own hands, and there is no reason to sit by and wonder any longer if you can do this!
Of course you can! You just have to take the first step and apply.
Information is provided on the application page on this blog.

Kumu Hula and 'Olapa Hula Training.."Many are Called, Few are Chosen."
we will begin accepting applications for the Kumu Hula and 'Olapa Hula Intensive Training program.
The mainland hula community is recognizing that this is a unique opportunity, and we are expecting many inquiries. Becoming a Kumu Hula is a serious undertaking. and it is not for everyone to do. It became apparent that we would need to assess each applicant as best as we could, but the fact of the matter is that it's really up to you...faith plus desire...indeed, does move mountains!
Because of the nature of this course and all that we want it to be, we felt it was necessary to maintain a smaller, more intimate group for the Kumu Hula training program. By staying true to to that concept we felt that we would be able to create a learning environment which would encourage an intimate bond that unites each member with a common purpose of aloha. The unity created would then enlarge our circles, our community, and our ohana.
You may have heard the expression,"Many are called, few are chosen." What does that quote mean to you? To me, it means that sometimes we hear a calling to be something, or do something, but when it gets right down to the nitty gritty of it, the fact is, we were probably just attracted to certain aspects of whatever it was. If you're feeling a desire to become a Kumu Hula, but maybe you're just unsure, you have doubts that this is your calling, your chosen path. Maybe you want to take the course and explore if it's for you. If that sentence speaks to you and you aren't really sure what your goals are in hula then I would recommend applying for the 'Olapa training. While in the 'Olapa training, you will be able to deepen your knowledge of hula and decide if the idea of becoming a kumu hula is the path you want to take. Then, when the opportunity presents itself again, you will know!
On the other hand, If your first love is hula and you've known for a million years that teaching the hula is what you want to do, (I've known for at least that long!) and the only thing holding you back, until now, is having the ability to be properly trained and mentored... then I would say that you are a pretty good candidate. and that all that is needed is your intention to make it happen!
